About the Y

Do You Know the Y?

At the Y, strengthening community is our cause. The Y serves three crucial areas of focus to help individuals, families and communities learn, grow and thrive.

THE Y IS FOR YOUTH DEVELOPMENT.
Because we believe that all kids deserve opportunities to discover who they are and what they can achieve.
That’s why, through the Y, youth today are cultivating the values, skills and relationships that lead to positive behaviors, better health and educational achievement.

THE Y IS FOR HEALTHY LIVING.
The Y brings families closer together, encourages good health and fosters connections through fitness, sports, fun and shared interests.

THE Y IS FOR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY.
The Y has been listening and responding to our communities most crucial needs for 160 years. Whether developing skills or emotional well-being, welcoming and connecting diverse populations or advocating for healthier communities, the Y fosters the care and respect all people need and deserve.

The Skaneateles YMCA & Community Center

In 2001, thanks to the efforts of the Skaneateles Recreational Charitable Trust (SRCT) and the local community, the Skaneateles Community Center opened.  The facility, owned by the SRCT, was operated by the Town of Skaneateles for ten years.  The Auburn YMCA-WEIU Board of Directors and the SRCT entered into a management agreement to operate the Skaneateles YMCA and Community Center effective August 1, 2010.  The SRCT owns the facility and is responsible for capital items; the Auburn YMCA assumes all operational responsibilities. As a branch of the Auburn YMCA-WEIU, the Skaneateles Y operates as an independent site, serving the residents of the greater Skaneateles community, with its own staff, programs and operating budget.  The Auburn YMCA offers   administrative support and program resources. Establishment of policies, fiscal oversight and strategic planning for both the Auburn and Skaneateles branches is the responsibility of the Auburn YMCA-WEIU Board of Directors. The addition of the Skaneateles Y as a branch provides a unique value to the members of both communities.  Membership reciprocity allows Y members to use the facilities and participate in programs at either Y.
